XXI-Universe

The Universe symbolizes the law of universality.
You are the universe.

Like the center stone, you possess within yourself
a universe of possibilities. What you can see in your
mind’s eye exists. Like Michelangelo, you can sculpt
anything out of yourself — a flower, a city, a god, a star.

Like the stone, you are whole and perfect; but as the
uncompleted sculpture, “The Awakening Giant,” your life
is an unfinished process. Always in a state of becoming,
you are simultaneously completing and beginning.

Squeezebox Opera by Bret Hostetler            36″ x 48″            Oil on canvas

Making art has always been a process of learning for me. Each of my artworks offers a new possibility. The process starts by describing an emotional space, and then the subject matter reveals itself, often times relating to my dreams.
I paint intuitively, correcting and giving order until the painting takes on its own original shape.

I believe great art observes the observer, it invites you in but you must reason with the ramifications of being there. I am inspired by graffiti artists as well as old masters.
When I work, I use music as a catalyst, and draw upon its ability to optimize the human spirit.
The outcome is the evidence of overcoming soulful obstacles on the path to knowing thyself.

My focus is on what binds us together as human beings. Water and earth are prominent in my paintings, as are they in our daily lives.
Ultimately, my artwork is my own modern psychology meant to reveal the magic and illusion in the world.

Bret Hostetler practices his psychology at his studio in the 1627 Studios
on Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon.

Walk-in appointments are available every last Thursday of the month.

I-Magician

The Magician symbolizes the law of talent. The universe has given you a multiplicity of talents, as shown in the Magician’s hand. As the gold of the Incan mask was extracted from the earth, you must extract your skills to create what you want to be. Like a shaman, you can put on any mask to become anyone.

The talents in the Magician’s offering hand represent your ability to realize your aspirations by expressing your inner resources. As the Magician your number is 1, the zero-spirit manifested in physical form. You are a transformer and a materializer.

“Magic” comes from the ancient “magh,” meaning power. Your power comes from your being a channel for the universe. From that universe you receive intuitive guidance on which you must act swiftly and decisively.

Mmmm, kodamatic…

Taken at an arts and acting camp where I work in the summer. They have a “photography tent,” where children young and old can borrow cameras and do a lot of cool photography-related activites.

The place is also literally covered in gorgeous old cameras, apparently donated by some photography enthusiasts a while back.

It’s wonderful… there’s old Kodaks like this, some even older-looking single-frame ones with small lenses and fabric covers, and all manner of gadgets and components hanging around.

Every now and then, a child will discover a working flash module and use it on people for the rest of the day!

I miss it there…

You were asking what the title of the piece is. But there is no title. In fact, I don’t put titles on a lot of the work I do.

Why? Because when it comes to abstract art, the work can speak to many different people in many different ways.

You can have a hundred people look at a specific piece and you could conceivably have a hundred different reactions to it. The meaning, feeling, and emotion that’s generated can be strikingly different from one person to the next.

So for me, by titling or “labeling” a piece you end up “putting it in a box”, so to speak. Then that piece becomes something specific. Which limits your imagination and the possibilities of what the piece could be or mean.

I like to leave it open to each individual looking at the piece to determine what it means to them without any outside influence telling them what it’s supposed to mean. That make sense?

Noel Barnett is a member of the Talisman Gallery at 1476 NE Alberta Street in sunny Portland, Oregon.

Hoping to showcase the beauty and design of pinball games, these images attempt to reveal the environment that has captivated players for decades.
Color and composition were my initial motivations for the series, while capturing the reflections of a metal sphere posed an interesting technical challenge.
The photographs in this collection are not as much a reflection of my efforts as they are of the people who influence and motivate me.

Violet, Indigo, and Blue from the series Roy G Biv

As children, it was how we remembered the colors of the rainbow:

red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Much like the rainbow itself, simultaneously simple and complex, I approached these paintings accordingly. This seven-painting series consisted of a blend of geometrical shapes and line work in an array of hues of any given color to create light and dark, shadow and highlight.

And most importantly, they were fun to make and look at.

Shawn Christopher‘s work can be seen at JoaT Studio in the 1627 Studios on Alberta Street in Portland, Oregon.

Art, represented by Athena, the Greek patron goddess of the arts, symbolizes the law of creativity.
You are a creative artist in all aspects of being and in all endeavours of worldly life.

Creativity is an alchemical art of dissolving old forms and recombining them as a new synthesis.
See the disintegration in your life as a creative opportunity.

You communicate yourself to the world by shooting forth through the rainbow your ideas, visions, and products. Your creative expression, like the orchid, has an impact on the world.

About this image:

i took this photo one autumn night at Pioneer Courthouse Square in
Portland, Oregon. i was experimenting with different camera settings, such as
aperture and shutter speed, as part of a photography class i was taking.

Like the cherry photo in a previous post, this is also a nice photo to use as a wallpaper: just click on the image and it will open in a new browser window. Then, right-click it and choose to set it as your desktop background.
